Monrovia – Amidst circulating claims by government officials regarding Liberia’s supposed acquisition of $500 million through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) card, the U.S. Embassy in Liberia has issued a clarification.
The U.S. Embassy confirms that the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has selected Liberia as newly eligible to develop a compact. This designation acknowledges Liberia’s dedication to essential economic and democratic governance reforms. However, it is crucial to note that eligibility does not equate to an immediate allocation of funds.
“MCC expects all partner countries to demonstrate a sustained commitment to the principles of inclusive democratic governance that form the foundation of MCC’s eligibility criteria,” stated the U.S. Embassy. “Eligibility alone does not guarantee that Liberia will receive a compact program.”
Both MCC and the U.S. Embassy express eagerness to collaborate with the Government of Liberia as they embark on the compact development process, emphasizing that the journey ahead involves continued adherence to key reforms and standards.
This clarification aims to provide accurate information to the public and prevent misunderstandings regarding the status and implications of Liberia’s MCC eligibility.
